Are peptides banned in sport? WADA, NCAA and the prohibited list

Are peptides banned in sport?

In anti-doping terms the answer is set by class, not by substance name. The WADA 2026 Prohibited List prohibits a whole class of peptide hormones, growth factors, related substances and mimetics at all times (section S2), and separately prohibits any substance without current regulatory approval for human use (section S0). The NCAA bans an equivalent class.

The two documents that answer the question

Anti-doping status is set by rulebooks, not by pharmacology, and the two rulebooks that come up most often are written by different organisations for different populations. Neither document answers whether a substance is lawful to possess, which is set out in are peptides legal, or whether it holds an approval, which is set out in which peptides are FDA approved.

The WADA Prohibited List is a mandatory International Standard of the World Anti-Doping Program, revised annually. The 2026 edition states that "the effective date of the List is 01 January 2026" and that the official text is published in English and French, the English version prevailing in the event of conflict. It binds athletes subject to the World Anti-Doping Code.

The NCAA Banned Substances document is an association rule for United States college sport, republished each academic year. The 2026-27 edition lists eight banned drug classes with examples, not a substance register.

A third document is regularly confused with both: the WADA Monitoring Program, described below, which is expressly not a list of prohibited substances.

S0: the section that catches unapproved compounds

A substance that is not addressed by any other section of the List falls under the first section, which the 2026 List words as follows:

"Any pharmacological substance which is not addressed by any of the subsequent sections of the List and with no current approval by any governmental regulatory health authority for human therapeutic use (e.g. drugs under pre-clinical or clinical development or discontinued, designer drugs, substances approved only for veterinary use) is prohibited at all times."

The 2026 edition adds a naming sentence directly beneath it: "This class covers many different substances including but not limited to BPC-157, 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP), ryanodine receptor-1-calstabin complex stabilizers e.g. S-107, S48168 (ARM210) and troponin activators (e.g. reldesemtiv and tirasemtiv)." The section header adds that "all prohibited substances in this class are Specified Substances".

That construction is why a compound can be prohibited without a list committee ever having discussed it: the trigger is regulatory approval status, not notoriety.

S2: the peptide class in the list's own words

Section S2 carries the heading "Peptide hormones, growth factors, related substances, and mimetics", is marked "prohibited at all times (in- and out-of-competition)", and states that "all prohibited substances in this class are non-Specified Substances". Its opening sentence contains the catch-all that makes the section far wider than its examples:

"The following substances, and other substances with similar chemical structure or similar biological effect(s), are prohibited."

The section divides into erythropoiesis-affecting agents (S2.1), peptide hormones and their releasing factors (S2.2) and growth factors and growth factor modulators (S2.3). The last of these lists named growth factors and growth factor modulators as bullets and then closes with a residual clause that extends the subsection to further growth factors and growth factor modulators not named in that list. The residual clause does not characterise the substances named above it.

Status by substance class

Each row is a class as the cited document words it, not a product statement. No peptide class in the 2026 List is limited to competition periods.

Several names in that table are approved prescription medicines rather than research compounds. Their appearance is a rule status only: where a medicine is approved, the product label and the prescriber govern its use, and no doping list changes that.

How the Prohibited List is structured

The List is not one flat register. It separates substances prohibited at all times from those prohibited only in competition, and adds a section for particular sports. The 2026 edition defines "prohibited at all times" as meaning that "the substance or method is prohibited In- and Out-of-Competition as defined in the Code".

A second distinction runs across the document. Under Article 4.2.2 of the Code all prohibited substances are Specified Substances except where the List says otherwise. The comment to that article notes that specified substances "should not in any way be considered less important or less dangerous", but are "simply substances and methods which are more likely to have been consumed or used by an Athlete for a purpose other than the enhancement of sport performance". S0 is specified; S2 is not.

The NCAA list is a separate document

The NCAA publishes its own list of banned drug classes rather than reproducing the WADA List. Its eight classes are worded as follows in the 2026-27 edition: stimulants; anabolic agents; beta blockers (banned for golf and rifle); diuretics and masking agents; narcotics; peptide hormones, growth factors, related substances and mimetics; hormone and metabolic modulators; beta-2 agonists.

Under the sixth class the document gives seven examples: BPC-157, erythropoietin (EPO), growth hormone (hGH), human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), ibutamoren (MK-677), IGF-1 (colostrum; deer antler velvet) and TB-500. Several of those examples are approved prescription medicines; their appearance is a rule status only, and where a medicine is approved its label and the prescriber govern its use. An exceptions line follows, naming further approved medicines that are not banned. The document states twice that there is no complete list of banned substances, once as a bold banner, and adds: "This is neither a complete nor exhaustive list. Any substance chemically/pharmacologically related to these classes is also banned."

The two rulebooks therefore reach BPC-157 by different routes: WADA through S0, because it has no regulatory approval for human therapeutic use, and the NCAA through its peptide class, where it is named outright.

What a Therapeutic Use Exemption is

A Therapeutic Use Exemption, usually abbreviated TUE, is a decision that allows an athlete to use a prohibited substance or method for a legitimate diagnosed medical condition. The International Testing Agency states the four conditions that must all be met: the prohibited substance or method is needed to treat a diagnosed medical condition backed by clinical evidence; its use will not enhance performance beyond a return to normal health; it is the recommended treatment and no permitted alternative exists; and the need is not a consequence of prior use of a prohibited substance or method without a TUE.

That is the definition, and it is the whole of what belongs on a general reference page. Whether an exemption is available in a given case, and who decides it, are questions for the athlete's own anti-doping organisation and treating clinician.

Monitoring is not prohibition

The 2026 Monitoring Program is a separate one-page document. Its footnote quotes Article 4.5 of the Code: WADA "shall establish a monitoring program regarding substances which are not on the Prohibited List, but which WADA wishes to monitor in order to detect potential patterns of misuse in sport."

The 2026 program carries its own category headed "Peptides Hormones, Growth Factors, Related Substances, and Mimetics"; for 2026 it contains a single entry, gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH) analogues in females under 18 years only, monitored in and out of competition. Monitoring that entry does not prohibit it: the prohibition for GnRH analogues in the List itself runs under S2.2.1 and is limited to males.

For 2026 the program includes markers of two prescription incretin-based medicines, in and out of competition. Those two are not on the Prohibited List; both are prescription-only, and for an approved medicine the label and the prescriber govern use.

Being on a doping list and being lawful to possess are different questions, and neither answers the other; how possession and supply are regulated differs by jurisdiction and is a separate subject.

Germany is one jurisdiction where a criminal statute runs alongside the sport rules. Section 2(3) of the Anti-Doping-Gesetz makes it an offence to acquire, possess or bring into the country a doping agent listed in the statute's annex "in nicht geringer Menge" – in more than a small quantity – for the purpose of doping in human sport, and section 4(1) attaches imprisonment of up to three years or a fine. Group II of that annex is headed "Peptidhormone, Wachstumsfaktoren, verwandte Stoffe und Mimetika", the same category name the sport rulebooks use. The annex lists substance groups; it does not itself set the quantity threshold. A quantity below that threshold is not thereby lawful: the criminal provision is one instrument among several, and medicines law applies to the same substances independently of it.

Common questions

Are peptides banned in sport?

Under the WADA 2026 Prohibited List an entire class of peptide hormones, growth factors, related substances and mimetics is prohibited at all times (section S2), and section S0 separately prohibits any pharmacological substance with no current approval by a governmental regulatory health authority for human therapeutic use. The NCAA lists an equivalent class in its own 2026-27 banned substances document.

Is BPC-157 banned by the NCAA?

Yes. The 2026-27 NCAA Banned Substances document names BPC-157 as an example under the class "Peptide hormones, growth factors, related substances and mimetics". The WADA 2026 Prohibited List names it separately under S0, non-approved substances, which is prohibited at all times.

Is TB-500 the same as thymosin beta-4?

No. Thymosin beta-4 is a naturally occurring human protein, 43 amino acids in its mature form (UniProt P62328), whereas TB-500 is a trade designation for a short synthetic fragment, characterised in the analytical literature as the N-terminal acetylated 17-23 sequence, with no standardised definition attached to the name. Neither is an approved medicine, and the WADA 2026 Prohibited List covers "Thymosin-β4 and its derivatives", naming TB-500, under S2.3.

What does section S0 of the WADA Prohibited List mean?

S0, "Non-approved substances", prohibits at all times any pharmacological substance that is not addressed by another section of the List and has no current approval by any governmental regulatory health authority for human therapeutic use. The 2026 edition gives drugs under pre-clinical or clinical development or discontinued, designer drugs, and substances approved only for veterinary use as examples.

Does a peptide have to be named on the list to be prohibited?

No. Section S2 of the WADA 2026 Prohibited List prohibits the named substances "and other substances with similar chemical structure or similar biological effect(s)", and the NCAA document states that it "is neither a complete nor exhaustive list" and that any substance chemically or pharmacologically related to its classes is also banned. The absence of a name from either document is therefore not a status statement.

What is a Therapeutic Use Exemption?

A Therapeutic Use Exemption, abbreviated TUE, is a decision by an anti-doping organisation that permits an athlete to use a prohibited substance or method for a diagnosed medical condition when strict conditions are met: the substance is needed to treat the condition, its use would not enhance performance beyond a return to normal health, no permitted alternative treatment exists, and the need is not a consequence of earlier use of a prohibited substance without a TUE. A substance appearing on the 2026 Monitoring Program is not prohibited by that listing. Conversely, the absence of a substance from the Prohibited List is not a status statement either: section S0 and the clause covering substances with similar chemical structure or similar biological effect apply regardless of whether a name is listed.

Lists change every year, and both of the sport documents quoted here say in their own text that they are not exhaustive, so a status read off a summary page – including this one – is only ever a pointer back to the current edition. For an approved medicine the authoritative text is the product label; for anything to do with an individual athlete's eligibility or health, the anti-doping organisation that governs that athlete and a qualified physician or pharmacist are the right addresses.
